Tobacco Mission Alternative: “Portrait of a Teen Smoker” provides a similar educational experience and can be completed in the classroom individually or assigned as homework. This alternative activity is located in the “Alternative and Additional Activities” section.
If, for some reason, simulator training is interrupted or the participant wishes to start over, the participant can pause 15 seconds so the simulator resets itself, or the instructor can remove the Pak cardboard sleeve, return the device to the docking station and the device will reset itself. After reset, the participant can push the talk button and start training again.
The practice smoking refusal event is not required; however, it is strongly recommended so that participants can have a guided experience through one event before they leave the classroom.
After simulator training and practice, the simulator is only active during a smoking refusal event, which is indicated when the green LED is lit.
For identification to occur, the green LED must be on, and the wide part of the wristband ID must make contact with the front top half of the simulator.
When the docking station is plugged into a wall socket, it will fully charge all devices in its slots in six hours.
After being fully charged in the docking station, a device in simulation will remain charged for four days. If left in an unplugged docking station, a device loses its charge in ten days.
The device can be muted during a smoking refusal event and before the start of the next smoking refusal event. Smoking refusal events missed in this way are recorded as “missed-muted.” The device cannot be muted indefinitely. Periods of time that require extended silence (e.g., a church service, a live performance) are best managed by leaving the simulator outside of the location (e.g., in the car).
No. The device’s rechargeable batteries are not user-serviceable. Do not disassemble the device. Contact Product Support at 800.830.1416 or +1.715.830.2040 for information on replacing and recycling batteries when the device’s rechargeable battery no longer holds a charge.
Devices should be stored in the docking station. Unplug the docking station if devices will not be used for three months or longer (e.g., over the summer, between semesters). To restore full charge, plug in the docking station at least six hours prior to use.
Parents and guardians are fully informed about the details of the simulation and its possible impact on family life in the “Smoking Kids? Not Yours! ySTART™ Program Permission Request.” Their signature on the “Smoking Kids? Not Mine! ySTART™ Program Permission Form” represents their understanding of the simulation and their permission for their child to participate.
Smoking Refusal Simulation Alternative: “2- or 3-Day Contract” provides a similar educational experience and can be completed at the same time as other participants are completing the smoking refusal simulation. This alternative activity is located in the “Alternative and Additional Activities” section.
Participants can review their Quick Reference Cards or relevant worksheets and fact sheets for reminders about the device components and smoking refusal event.
Yes, the wristband ID is not affected by moisture or water. However, the electronic simulator should not be exposed to moisture or water.
Will his or her wristband ID or electronic simulator be affected by security gates at the airport? Neither the simulator nor the wristband ID are affected by security gates or screening machines. However, they may turn on the gate alarm as the participant passes through it.
If the red LED is completely off, it means the battery charge was used up and the simulation ended. A flashing red LED means that some type of interference (mechanical shock or electrostatic discharge) caused the device to lose power during the simulation and the simulation ended. The time at which power was lost is recorded in the simulation report. Instructors can tell participants that they will be graded on their performance up to when the device lost power.
While the device is very durable, the Pak cardboard sleeve provides additional protection. The condition of the Pak will indicate the participants’ care of the simulator. The device cannot be disassembled while sealed inside the Pak. Intentional damage to the device may result in a mark or crack in the plastic. Water immersion may cause the red LED to turn OFF and the device may not communicate with the docking station.
The “Unassigned” folder is the default folder for all simulation data. Create new folders for simulation data to fall into for easier data tracking.
There is no limit. Select the Report Folder when programming the device; the data will automatically transmit to that folder when the simulation is completed.
There is no maximum number of devices you can program at one time.
Yes, updates are free. At the “Home” screen, select the “Downloads" button to download the most recent revision of Control Center. Do this every few months to make sure your software has the current revisions.
Yes. The deleted simulations will go into the “Trash” folder and will remain there until the “Trash” folder is emptied.
Yes, except for the “Unassigned” and “Trash” folders.
